Chiara Dall'Ora

Biography
Dr. Chiara Dall’Ora leads a program of research aiming to improve the health, wellbeing and performance of the health workforce, with a specific interest in the organization of shift work and staffing levels. Dr. Dall’Ora has studied burnout extensively, and her recent literature review on burnout in nursing (Dall'Ora et al., 2020) has already attracted more than 100 citations. Notwithstanding the impact of burnout on systems' quality and safety, burnout is rarely monitored routinely in workplaces; many organizations fail to predict and prevent burnout, and limit themselves to acknowledging when burnout has already occurred. Dr. Dall’Ora will discuss the challenges of measuring burnout in healthcare, including opportunities to monitor burnout through the triangulation of workers’ symptom reports, with manager and/or colleague assessment and monitoring of known predictors of burnout, including recent shift patterns and workload.
